Chicago Violence

One problem that is happening in Chicago is having a great deal of shootings. January 1st - December 12, 2016 4,171 people had became victims in shootings. According to The Chicago Tribune, last year there were approximately 2,988 people that were victims in shootings. According to the Chicago Tribune shootings, 2016 had more shootings than 2015. Also, 2,00 people have been victims in shootings this year and last year, says the Chicago Tribune. According to The Chicago Tribune, 2,988 had been victims in shootings last year. This means that Chicago itself is dangerous. Also Chicago is not the problem it's the people who choose to do these crucial things to innocent people that they do not know, according to the Chicago Tribune.

In a video by the Chicago Tribune they name possible causes of the shootings that are happening in Chicago. One cause is the access to guns. According to the Chicago Tribune it states that, “A large percentage of people buying fund in the last decade.” This means that more people are starting to own guns and also it causes more shootings and deaths. Another cause is police morale. According to the Chicago Tribune police moral is, “The Chicago police department is under a U.S. justice department system Civil Rights investigation over allegations of this loose conduct.”

On Monday, December 12, 2016, Father Michael Pfleger said, “...will lead a group of anti violence marchers down Michigan Avenue on New Year’s Eve.” Also said, “Pfleger said the marchers, many of whom will be family members of victims, will each carry a two-foot tall white wooden cross bearing the names of each person killed by gun violence in the city this year.” This means that Father Michael Pfleger cares about what is going on in Chicago with all the violence and shootings. The crosses were made by Greg Zanis. According to Father Pfleger, “This is a Chicago problem. not a South Side and West problem. It's a Chicago problem.”

Titanic A Journey Through Time

In my nonfiction book Titanic A Journey Through Time , It is about how the Titanic was built and who built it. Also who were the people that were on board the Titanic. The book also shows things that people found when they were discovering Titanic. In the book they show pictures of the ship when it is getting built. The author, William MacQuitty, shows how big the ship is and what they use to build the ship. The book also tells you all the five Ws, who, what, where, when, why. The book, has great information about the Titanic, some parts talking about what materials they have discovered under the ocean where Titanic had sunk.

On passage that I found interesting in the book is where the author talks about what materials they have used to make Titanic. But the first ship they have made was named the Olympian, but after they had found a large punched hole through the liners of the boat, this was caused during the departure from Southampton. Then so, they made some vivid details to the ship and changed the name to Titanic. Some of the parts they used for Titanic was one, on January 5,1910 it's two stern frame castings weighed 70 tons and it's height was 68ft 3in.Then on February 7, 1910 the boss brackets oh Titanic had arrived, and what these boss brackets can do is to support the new liner propeller shafts. Tragically, on April 21, 1910 Samuel Joseph Scott, only 15 years old had dies after a fall from Titanic hull. This is interesting to me because the author explains what things were made of and out on the Titanic. It also teaches me some new information I haven't learned yet. Also they include who had died in the Titanic when they had been building it.

Things I have learned that I will not forget in the near future is artifacts they have found in the Titanic. For example like a white pitcher, which belonged to Nautile’s collection baskets. Another is a cloth that was hand-sewn from a piece of canvas, and a marble sink, first class, a grey floor tile with a red insert, second class, plates. These things that they found were very important to them because they are things that people who lived back then on the Titanic used. They also have found a doer that linked to the forward port side D deck of the Titanic. I also won't forget how the Titanic would look because the author showed pictures of how the Titanic looked before it sank and after it sank. It also showed pictures of the boat when it was getting built.

Gratitude Blog

One thing I am grateful for is one, my family. I am grateful for my family because they are always their for me and they care for me. My family is something very close to me that I care about. They are always making me laugh and smile when im down. They are the light to my life. They help me out with things that I have trouble with, like for example I have a hard time with my best friend and they would always come up with something to make me feel better and my friend. They also make everything fun when I come to visit them, we play games and play outside. They love me and I love them too and that's why I am grateful for my family.

Another thing I am grateful for is my Cousin Aaliyah. She is grateful to me because when I need her she is always their. She is always listening to me when I am upset or angry or just need a really good friend to talk to. She is like a friend to me a best friend. She always makes me smile when she comes and visits me. My mom always says that we were always close when we were little and we still are. She helps me with things that other people can’t. She is always embarrassing me in front of the rest of the family but I still love her.

One other thing I am grateful for is my mom. I am grateful for my mom because she loves me with all her heart and I love her too. Everyday she will always say that she loves me and my siblings. She is always their for me when I need her the most. She helps me with things that other people can’t. She makes me smile and laugh every single day when I see her.

Article of the Week Impressions

Today in my ELA class we did a gallery walk on student updating us on what is happening in the world. One thing I have learned was that an earthquake had happened in New Zealand. The earthquake was 6.3 magnitude and two people had died in this earthquake, also it would cost a lot on the damage that was taken from the earthquake, which caused destroying property and injuring others.

One other thing I learned was in Canada there is a dangerous virus going through called Ebola. Ebola is still occurring in some parts but the most is Canada and it is dangerous. Ebola virus is a sickness that can lead to death if not treated well.

Another thing I learned and found interesting is that their are two kinds of Murphy's Laws, one is the Murphy Law of Coincidence and the other is something about the probability of something happening. This law states that it is possible for two people in the same group to have the same birthdays.

Weekly Topic

Today's blog is going to be about a book that i am currently reading in class. The book is call, Dead Is Not An Option. In this book it is mainly about this girl named Daisy Giordano live in a little town called Nightshade and also her family, Rose and poppy are her sisters and then her mother and father. Daisy likes to solve mysteries in her town Nightshade. In this book she tries to solve a mystery that goes against Werewolves and Vampires, which they hate each other because of things that are going on and think they have done those things. But Rose thinks that it is the Scourge who done these bad things and made the Werewolves and Vampires hate each other. The Scourge are a group of people who hate the paranormal people that live in Nightshade.

In this book one of the characters, Daisy Is related to one of my cousin because my cousin is a curious and clever person just like Daisy. What also is related about them is that Daisy likes to figure things out once she winds out what is going on. The book also relates to my family by Daisy's sisters not always getting along with each other. One other thing Daisy  is afraid of not going to this college school she wants to go to, UC Nightshade.

In the book, Dead Is Not An Option, Daisy is my favorite character because she is different from other girls, what I mean by that is that she has a power where she can talk to Rose in her mind and can levitate objects but have not mastered that skill yet. But shthey has many more things to learn from her powers. Another thing I like about Daisy is that she is a mysterious and curious girl who loves mysteries and loves solving them, even if it is dangerous. She loves solving mysteries but also she keeps track in school and does her best in school, but she is waiting for a  letter if they accepted her at a college named UC Nightshade. UC Nightshade is a popular college, and Daisy's sisters go their for college, So she also wants to go their as well.

The Soldiers

The soldiers were hopeful to the citizens even the ones they do not know.
The soldiers helped those in need of caring.
The soldiers were the ones who protected us from people who were against us.
The soldiers did what they could to help us and keep us safe and the world.
The soldiers…
Who fought for us and protected us when we need them the most!
Who sacrificed their lives for us!
Who can do anything else but they chose to fight, protect, risk their lives for us!
Just to keep us safe, these people…..
Are the ones that we most depend on.
Thank you.

Investigative Journalism

On saturday, October 26, 2016, there was a car racing down a street with the passenger screaming, “Go Cubs” with a flag sticking out of the car that had a “W” on it. Which stand for the Cubs. The passenger was doing this because the cubs won their game. The score of the game was five to zero. Other people were also screaming “Go Cubs!”. There were also fireworks, blue red white. Probably to significant the Cubs on their winning. It was a chaos of what happened because people were acting like the passenger that was driving the car. This happened in Berwyn and also in Cicero.

1st Quarter Reflections

In 1st Quarter, ELA I learned that many things that I haven't or forgotten in 7th grade. For example Vocabulary. When I started 8th grade vocabulary ELA, I didn't remember the words and some were already given to me in 7th grade. So when the class was taking a Vocabulary test I started off in a bad position but on the other tests I gotten better by the day.  So every week I learned different words, and could use those words in the future. To help with studying the words Mrs. Larson, my 8th grade ELA teacher taught the class a Frayer Model. Which helps us learn the word and to also teach us what it means. We also use it for Prefixes, which help us learn new words with that prefix and also what it means.

One new thing I learned in ELA 8th grade is how to do a news story. This was my favorite part because I had the experience to be a newscaster. This helped me because in the future I would probably need to do this when i'm in High School. What I also liked about this learning subject is that we got to go outside and observe things that are not usually there, like what observers and Newscasters do.

Another new thing in ELA 8th grade Is, I learned what is a Blog and how it works. I also liked this part of ELA because it was interesting and we didn't have to write it in our notebooks. It was new to me because i never used the blog on google. Another new thing In ELA was a website called Edmodo. I liked this website because it helps me find out what we have for homework if I forget.

Film Vs. Book

An event from The Giver is when Asher was assigned as a Director of Recreation, and Fiona was assigned to take care of the old so The house of the old. But in the movie the difference was that their assignments were different. Asher's assignment was a Drone Pilot and Fiona, her assignment was a Nurturer. These assignments are different from the book because well they are different but they help Jonas escape later on in the movie. Fiona's assignment helps Jonas by taking Gabe from the Nurturing center and Asher help Jonas escape when the Chief Elder tells him to get rid of Jonas.

In the movie the ending was different from the book because first of all Asher and Fiona help out Jonas escaping the community by using their assignments, so Fiona had the assignment of a Nurturer and Asher had the assignment of a Drone Pilot. One other difference in the book is that in the movie they show Jonas seeing the sled and also going down and passing the border they had for the memories, also seeing the house that he saw in the memory.

The most medium that impacted my understanding of The Giver was the film. The film was the most that impacted my understanding of The Giver because in the film it shows pictures of how the community looks like and in the book they didn't give enough evidence how the community looks like. Also in the ending they show that when Jonas sees the sled he goes down and passes the border of the community to return the memories to the people, also he sees the house (what Jonas saw in the memory.)

The Giver Blog Assessment

In the book The Giver, Jonas is the type of person that is dynamic. If you don't know a dynamic person is when a person changes throughout a book, movie, etc. I think that Jonas is a dynamic person because in the beginning of the book Jonas was uncertain and afraid. And when he turns a Twelve he gets the job as a Receiver he changes by learning new things such as love, pain, and color. He also changes by being curious and knows everything but not everything about the community.

When Jonas first had the feeling of love, “I couldn't quite get the word for the whole feeling of it, the feeling that was so strong in the room.”  (14) This quote fits with the topic sentence because it shows that Jonas is learning something new from the Giver so that means that he is changing by learning something new.

When Jonas had notice that he was giving a memory to the new child which is Gabriel, “He was not aware of giving the memory; but suddenly he realized that it was becoming dimmer, that it was sliding through his hand into the being of the new child.” (116) This fits the topic sentence because Jonas learns that he can transfer memories like the Giver does to him.

The theme that I chose in the book The Giver it is Importance of Memories. I picked this theme because in the book there's a lot of memories about a lot of things such as the past. Also because that the book talks a lot about memories and the Giver explains that their are no memories about the past shared to the citizens of the community.

When Jonas wanted the Giver to go with him on the quest to find ElseWhere he says, “The worst part of holding memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.” (154) This quote fits in with the topic sentence because the Giver is talking about his opinion on the memories and that they should be shared and it's good to have them shared not just stored into one person. It's too much for them to take all of the memories at once.

When Jonas was arguing about why they have to keep all the memories to themselves and Jonas says, “without the memories it's all meaningless.” (105) This fits in with my topic sentence because it tells us that Jonas does not like the way the memories are only to themselves and if memories aren't shared to other people the world would be meaningless and their would be nothing to explore like new things if everything is the same.

The Giver

While reading The Giver by Lois Lowry there have been several again and again things from the book. One such again and again is the Twelve ceremony. In chapter 2 Jonas and his Family unit talk about what their next ceremony is going to be when,  "Jonas shivered- The Ceremony of Tweleve was the last of the Ceremonies. The most important." This keeps on showing again and again because to Jonas it is the last ceremonies he will ever have. The ceremony of Twelve, the last ceremony for the Eleven. They also get an assignment, which they are assigned a job.

while reading The Giver by Lois Lowry there have been many memories shard by Jonas and the citizens. One such memory is Jonas and the Airplane memory. In chapter 1 Jonas and the citizens See a plane up in the sky when, "Then one more time, a moment later, from the opposite direction, the same plane- stop what they were doing and wait, confused, for an explanation of the frightening event." This memory might be important because it shows us that Jonas and th citizens of the community are scared of airplanes. Also this tells us at least something about all of the citizens in the community.
